\nPotremmo dire che siamo al cospetto di una delle ultime grandi cantanti che hanno caratterizzato l’epopea della musica afroamericana. Una storia, la sua, molto particolare: nasce nel 1928, a Detroit, nel Michigan e subito si fa notare per le sue doti. Inizia a cantare ed entra subito nel giro dei grandi musicisti jazz. Dato che lavorava principalmente con musicisti di colore, venne molto osteggiata dalla comunit\u00e0 bianca, ma non si lasci\u00f2 scoraggiare e persistette nella sua carriera. Fu verso la fine degli anni ’70 che il pubblico inizi\u00f2 a capire il suo stile senza compromessi, e la sua popolarit\u00e0 crebbe, come aumentarono anche le sue partecipazioni in vari album, per le principali etichette internazionali (ECM, Highnote, SteeepleChase, Ble Note). Le sue collaborazione spaziano dai grandi musicisti del passatoa quelli del presente ( Charlie Parker, George Russel, Steve Khun, Lee Konitz…).
\nI suoi concerti sono sempre delle piccole perle di eleganza, vedono la presenza costante di moltissimi appassionati che riconoscono la caratura formidabile della sua straordinaria vocalit\u00e0 testimoniata da una carriera infinita, densa di premi attestati e riconoscimenti e che continua oggi con un nuovo disco, articolato da un quartetto di supermusicians italiani che da anni la supportano nelle sue peregrinazioni nel vecchio continente.
\nIl titolo del disco, “Lucky to Be Me”, registrato dal vivo in Italia nel 2016 suona come un manifesto di una vita vissuta intensamente ed interamente dedicata alla musica. “Felice per quello che sono” segna il ritorno sulla scena discografica di un interprete che ha lasciato davvero il segno nella storia della tradizione vocale jazz afroamericana. \nWe could say that we are in the presence of one of the last great singers who have characterized the epic of African American music.
