\n\u201cQuesto progetto musicale cerca di raccontarvi una storia molto speciale che conosciuto e ho amato immediatamente, ogni brano rappresenta un piccolo momento di essa. Ho immaginato i luoghi e le persone che hanno visto nascere, accompagnato e poi perduto per sempre Bas Jan Ader, artista olandese attivo negli anni settanta del Novecento, scomparso misteriosamente in mare durante una performance che lui stesso intitol\u00f2 \u201cIn cerca del miracolo\u201d. Contradanza \u00e8 piena di citazioni sonore e letterarie che sottolineano i grandi e piccoli temi presenti nella poetica di Bas Jan Ader. Ho lavorato nel desiderio di comprenderlo, seguirlo e dargli un ultimo appassionato addio sulla soglia di quel punto remotissimo dove nessuno pu\u00f2 trovarsi se non in solitudine. Contradanza \u00e8 il nome di una particolare forma musicale tipica della musica cubana dell\u2019Ottocento. Le contradanze cubane erano composte per pianoforte, talvolta per pianoforte e voce lirica secondo una logica che un poco le avvicina al nostro repertorio liederistico. Due grandi compositori: Manuel Saumell ed Ernesto Lecouna hanno generosamente prestato alla mia immaginazione la struttura e gli ingredienti musicali che mi servivano per tessere questa suite. Ho scritto dei testi originali sui temi delle contradanze di Saumell e le ho arrangiate affinch\u00e8 emergesse la loro grande attualit\u00e0 e la geniale presenza di elementi ritmici di stupefacente modernit\u00e0. Si sente riecheggiare nel disco anche la vena inesauribile di Stephen Foster, il pi\u00f9 grande compositore bianco dell\u2019Ottocento americano, la cui voce ho voluto includere in questo corale addio perch\u00e9 anche lui parte di una cultura musicale primigenia del jazz che io amo e portatore quindi della grande innovazione che verr\u00e0. Bas Jan Ader scomparve nel 1975 durante il suo viaggio solitario sulla barchetta \u201cOcean Wave\u201d nella sua performance che intitol\u00f2 \u201cIn search of the Miraculous\u201d. Accostare Bas Jan Ader al repertorio popolare dell\u2019Ottocento \u00e8 il mio modo per sottolineare quanto questo grande artista abbia saputo essere romantico, quanto potente sia stata la sua voce di uomo isolato davanti all\u2019infinito, entro la propria particolare soglia di umanit\u00e0, profondissima.

\n\u201cThis is a musical project that tries to express a very special story which touched me, every track represents a small part of it. I imagined the society, the places and people which knew, welcomed, loved and then lost Bas Jan Ader, a Dutch artist and performer who worked in the seventies and disappeared in a performance that he called \u201cIn search of the miraculous\u201d. Contradanza is full of musical and literary quotes symbolizing most of the themes tied to Bas jan Ader\u2019s work. It is my own attempt to understand him, follow him trough the sea, and giving him a last goodbye, before he arrives that mysterious place which can only be reached in solitude. Contradanza is a style of musical composition common in Cuban popular tradition and it was very common in the Nineteenth Century. Cuban Contradanzas were composed for piano only and were meant to be danced, although many examples exist of Contradanzas for piano and coloratura soprano voice. These have a kind of similarity to our Lieder repertoire from the same period. Two great composers: Maniel Saumell and Ernesto Lecuona were especially important inspirations for me. To them I owe the structure and musical ingredients I needed to complete this project. I wrote original lyrics to their themes and I arranged the songs to underline the susprising modernity of the rhythmic structures they used in their music. I decided to also include a tribute to Stephen Foster\u2019s songs, since he was the most influential white american composer of that period, and I felt his voice was needed to reinforce this choral farewell I was preparing. His music is enormously important to early jazz culture which I love and he contributed to the great innovations which were to follow.
\nBas Jan Ader disappeared in 1975 during a solitary trip on his small boat \u201cOcean Wave\u201d three weeks after he set off from the United States attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean and reach the United Kingdom, during the performance he entitled \u201cIn Search of the Miraculous\u201d. His deserted vessel was found off the coast of Ireland on 18 April 1976 but he is still missing.
\nDrawing connections between Bas Jan Ader and popular music of the Nineteenth Century is my attempt to underline how romantic his work and existence was, and to reaffirm the power of his message as an isolated and profound man facing human Nature seeking a Miracle.
\nBas Jan Ader allows himself no distractions, he doesn\u2019t try to trick or manipulate us with mannerism or smart advertising intuitions just to evoke things which are difficult to confront. Bas Jan Ader used his very life as the raw material for his work of art: he didn’t use just his body, or his public image.
\nBas Jan Ader tied his very existence to his work and it is this commitment which fills it with significance\u201d.
