Simone Guiducci

Il chitarrista e compositore Simone Guiducci, nato a Torino ma mantovano d’adozione,  è considerato uno dei personaggi di spicco della scena jazzistica italiana, con collaborazioni discografiche e concertistiche di risonanza internazionale, al fianco di personaggi come Ralph Alessi, Erik Friedlander, Don Byron, Eberhard Weber, Paolo Fresu e Gianluigi Trovesi, Mauro Negri.

Diplomato al Biennio Jazz del Conservatorio di Trento, oltre che laureato in Filosofia presso l’ Università di Bologna, attualmente è titolare di cattedra in Chitarra Jazz  presso il Conservatorio Statale di Mantova. Guiducci è autore di due volumi  “Django Reinhardt. Tecnica e storia di un precursore fra swing e bebop” e “Diario di bordo di Chitarra Jazz”.

Inizialmente influenzato dalla poetica di Django Reinhardt come dalla psichedelia rock-blues di Jimi Hendrix, e profondamente legato alla creatività folk-prog dei primi anni’70, Simone Guiducci ha iniziato da totale autodidatta all’età di 12 anni imparando dai dischi il repertorio dei Beatles, per poi diventare a vent’anni fans di Chet Baker e Joao Gilberto. Dopo aver seguito negli anni ’80 alcuni stages con Mick Goodrick, John Scofield e Jim Hall, ed aver avuto l’ occasione di incontrare in jam session a Umbria Jazz musicisti del calibro di Roy Hargrove, Paul Jeffrey, Ralph Moore, Walter Booker, Bob Stoloff e Claudio Roditi, Simone Guiducci è emerso agli inizi degli anni’ 90 come membro del quartetto TRAPEZOMANTILO del clarinettista Mauro Negri, vincendo con questa formazione il Concorso Nazionale JAZZCONTEST 1991 organizzato dal CORRIERE DELLA SERA presso lo storico club CAPOLINEA di Milano. In seguito ha messo a frutto le esperienze maturate al fianco di Paolo Fresu, Mauro Negri ed Enrico Rava  (al fianco del quale ha inciso il suo album di debutto come solista “New Flamenco Sketches”)  dando vita nel 1995 al proprio progetto solistico “GRAMELOT” inaugurando così una originale strada di dialogo creativo fra folk e jazz e lavorando (in concerto e su disco) con personaggi straordinari come Ralph Alessi, Erik Friedlander, Chris Speed, Don Byron, Kenny Wheeler, Eberhard Weber.

Simone Guiducci ha all’attivo oltre 20 incisioni, fra produzioni come leader e partecipazioni come sideman; fra queste spiccano i dischi incisi per l’etichetta Felmay con il progetto GRAMELOT ENSEMBLE (con Achille Succi, Fausto Beccalossi, Salvatore Maiore e Roberto Dani) :  CANTADOR (2000), disco del debutto dello storico quintetto; CHORALE (2002) a cui hanno collaborato ospiti come il trombettista Ralph Alessi, il clarinettista Chris Speed, la vocalist Maria Pia De Vito, il sassofonista Nicolas Simion ed il violoncellista Erik Friedlander; DANCIN’ ROOTS (2004), a cui hanno preso parte il clarinettista Don Byron, il pianista Andy Milne ed ancora il trombettista Ralph Alessi, e STORIE DI FIUME (2006). Nel 2012, infine, l’ultimo lavoro con il “Gramelot”: il disco, intitolato THAT’S ALL FOLKS, vede ancora la partecipazione come guest del trombettista Ralph Alessi. Fra questi lavori, occorre segnalare che il disco Chorale è entrato nel 2002 nella  TopTen internazionale della rivista newyorkese All About Jazz, diretta da Michael Ricci.

Al di fuori del progetto GRAMELOT, Simone Guiducci ha realizzato due importanti incisioni per la label Abeat:  nel 2002 “MY SECRET LOVE” (al fianco di Ares Tavolazzi, Paolo Birro, Riccardo Biancoli e Javier Girotto) e “SLANG” ( con il bassista Eberhard Weber, Matt Renzi e Kyle Gregory).

Infine, il chitarrista ha dato sfogo alla sua passione per la musica del mitico chitarrista Django Reinhardt in due occasioni discografiche : nel 2003 ha pubblicato per la World Series Splasch il disco-tributo “DJANGO’S JUNGLE” (al fianco del violinista Florin Niculescu, del clarinettista Chris Speed e del fisarmonicista Gianni Coscia fra gli altri), entrato nella Top Ten 2003 della rivista MUSICA JAZZ ed inserit0 dal critico francese Francois Billard fra le più interessanti retrospettive su Django Reinhardt comparse nel panorama mondiale nel suo volume enciclopedico “Django, un Geant sur son Nuages” . Nel 2010, Guiducci ha poi realizzato un nuovo omaggio alla musica del mitico chitarrista Manouche, intitolato “DJANGO NEW DIRECTIONS”. Un disco questo, realizzato a capo di un sestetto con Mauro Ottolini, Achille Succi, Danilo Gallo, Zeno DeRossi, Emanuele Parrini , che si è classificato al terzo posto assoluto fra i dischi italiani del 2010 nel referendum indetto fra i critici musicali dalla rivista MUSICA & DISCHI, oltre ad essere disco del mese a dicembre 2010 sulla rivista MUSICA JAZZ.

Nel campo teatrale e della Canzone d’Autore , Simone Guiducci ha curato insonorizzazioni ed arrangiamenti per spettacoli e tour rappresentati al fianco della raffinata interprete Anna Maria Castelli, affiancando attori come Omero Antonutti e Mario Valdemarin e lavorando con il regista ed autore Oreste Castagna. Si è più volte esibito al fianco del Quartetto d’Archi dei Virtuosi Italiani.

Le uscite discografiche di Guiducci sono state recensite con entusiasmo su riviste specializzate italiane e internazionali, tra cui le testate francesi JazzMan e JazzMagazine, la tedesca JazzPodium, che gli ha dedicato nel 2004 un’ intervista,  la britannica JazzWise, la statunitense All About jazz e le italiane JazzMagazine, Jazzit e Musica Jazz.

Guiducci ha partecipato a numerose trasmissioni sulle reti radiofoniche nazionali, a partire dalla esibizione col quartetto Trapezomantilo di Mauro Negri in diretta nel 1994 alla storica trasmissione Radio 1 Jazz, condotta da Adriano Mazzoletti; si è poi esibito più volte in diretta con suoi gruppi a RadioTre Suite, invitato da Carlo Boccadoro ; Radio Tre ha trasmesso i concerti tenuti dal suo gruppo a Clusone Jazz 1999 e Iseo Jazz 2003; ha partecipato alla trasmissione Farenheit, esibendosi in diretta dal Salone Libro di Torino.

Nel corso degli ultimi 15 anni si è esibito , oltre che nei maggiori festivals jazz italiani (con ben 7 partecipazioni al prestigioso Clusone Jazz), in teatri e rassegne in giro per il mondo : a Tokyo, Vancouver, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Mosca, Kyoto, Sao Paulo, Caracas, Quito, Lima, Città del Messico, Guatemala City, Montreal, Stoccolma, Helsinki, Vilnius, Tallin, Amsterdam, Liegi, Lione, Ankara, Istanbul, Brema, Berlino, Dusseldorf, Dublino, Nantes, Vigo, Zagabria, Belgrado, Tirana, Haifa, Nazareth e altri luoghi ancora .

Guitarist and composer Simone Guiducci, born in Turin and long-time resident of Mantua, is regarded as one of the leading figures on the Italian jazz scene, with an impressive record of international collaborations and performances alongside artists such as Ralph Alessi, Erik Friedlander, Don Byron, Eberhard Weber, Paolo Fresu, Gianluigi Trovesi and Mauro Negri.

He graduated from the Jazz Master’s Programme at the Conservatory of Trento and holds a degree in Philosophy from the University of Bologna. He is currently Professor of Jazz Guitar at the Mantua State Conservatory. Guiducci is also the author of two books: Django Reinhardt. Technique and History of a Pioneer between Swing and Bebop and Diario di bordo di Chitarra Jazz (Jazz Guitar Logbook).

Initially influenced by the musical vision of Django Reinhardt, as well as by the psychedelic rock-blues of Jimi Hendrix, Guiducci has always maintained a deep connection with the folk-prog creativity of the early 1970s. Entirely self-taught, he began playing guitar at the age of twelve, learning the Beatles’ repertoire directly from records. By the age of twenty, he had become an enthusiastic admirer of Chet Baker and João Gilberto.

During the 1980s, he attended workshops with Mick Goodrick, John Scofield and Jim Hall, and had the opportunity to meet and play in jam sessions at Umbria Jazz with musicians such as Roy Hargrove, Paul Jeffrey, Ralph Moore, Walter Booker, Bob Stoloff and Claudio Roditi.

In the early 1990s, Guiducci emerged as a member of clarinettist Mauro Negri’s TRAPEZOMANTILO Quartet, winning the 1991 JAZZCONTEST National Competition, organized by Corriere della Sera at the historic Capolinea club in Milan.

Drawing on his experiences working alongside Paolo Fresu, Mauro Negri and Enrico Rava—with whom he recorded his debut album as a leader, New Flamenco Sketches—Guiducci launched his own project, GRAMELOT, in 1995. The project opened up an original dialogue between folk and jazz, leading to concerts and recordings with extraordinary musicians including Ralph Alessi, Erik Friedlander, Chris Speed, Don Byron, Kenny Wheeler and Eberhard Weber.

Guiducci has released more than 20 recordings, both as a leader and as a sideman. Among these are the albums recorded for the Felmay label with the GRAMELOT ENSEMBLE, featuring Achille Succi, Fausto Beccalossi, Salvatore Maiore and Roberto Dani: CANTADOR (2000), the debut album of the historic quintet; CHORALE (2002), featuring guests including trumpeter Ralph Alessi, clarinettist Chris Speed, vocalist Maria Pia De Vito, saxophonist Nicolas Simion and cellist Erik Friedlander; DANCIN’ ROOTS (2004), featuring clarinettist Don Byron, pianist Andy Milne and once again trumpeter Ralph Alessi; and STORIE DI FIUME (2006).

In 2012 came the latest recording with Gramelot, THAT’S ALL FOLKS, again featuring Ralph Alessi as a guest. CHORALE was selected in 2002 among the International Top Ten by the New York-based magazine All About Jazz, edited by Michael Ricci.

Outside the GRAMELOT project, Simone Guiducci recorded two important albums for the ABeat Records label: MY SECRET LOVE (2002), featuring Ares Tavolazzi, Paolo Birro, Riccardo Biancoli and Javier Girotto, and SLANG, featuring bassist Eberhard Weber, Matt Renzi and Kyle Gregory.

Guiducci has also twice explored his enduring passion for the music of legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt. In 2003, he released the tribute album DJANGO’S JUNGLE for World Series Splasch, alongside violinist Florin Niculescu, clarinettist Chris Speed and accordionist Gianni Coscia, among others. The album was included in MUSICA JAZZ magazine’s Top Ten of 2003 and was singled out by French critic François Billard as one of the most interesting international retrospectives on Django Reinhardt in his encyclopedic volume Django, un Géant sur son Nuage.

In 2010, Guiducci created a further tribute to the music of the legendary Manouche guitarist, DJANGO NEW DIRECTIONS. Recorded with a sextet featuring Mauro Ottolini, Achille Succi, Danilo Gallo, Zeno De Rossi and Emanuele Parrini, the album ranked third among the Italian albums of 2010 in the critics’ poll organized by Musica & Dischi, and was also named Album of the Month in the December 2010 issue of MUSICA JAZZ.

In the fields of theatre and Italian singer-songwriter music, Guiducci has created soundtracks and arrangements for productions and tours featuring the sophisticated singer Anna Maria Castelli, working alongside actors such as Omero Antonutti and Mario Valdemarin, as well as director and author Oreste Castagna. He has also performed on several occasions with the Virtuosi Italiani String Quartet.

Guiducci’s recordings have received enthusiastic reviews in leading Italian and international specialist publications, including the French magazines JazzMan and JazzMagazine, Germany’s JazzPodium, which featured him in an interview in 2004, Britain’s JazzWise, America’s All About Jazz, and the Italian magazines JazzMagazine, Jazzit and Musica Jazz.

Guiducci has appeared on numerous national radio programmes. His radio career began with a live performance by Mauro Negri’s Trapezomantilo Quartet in 1994 on the historic Radio 1 Jazz, hosted by Adriano Mazzoletti. He subsequently performed several times live on Radio3 Suite, invited by Carlo Boccadoro. Radio3 also broadcast concerts by his group at Clusone Jazz 1999 and Iseo Jazz 2003. He has also appeared on the programme Fahrenheit, performing live from the Turin International Book Fair.

Over the past fifteen years, in addition to performing at Italy’s major jazz festivals—including seven appearances at the prestigious Clusone Jazz Festival—Guiducci has performed in theatres and at festivals and concert series around the world, including Tokyo, Vancouver, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Kyoto, São Paulo, Caracas, Quito, Lima, Mexico City, Guatemala City, Montreal, Stockholm, Helsinki, Vilnius, Tallinn, Amsterdam, Liège, Lyon, Ankara, Istanbul, Bremen, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dublin, Nantes, Vigo, Zagreb, Belgrade, Tirana, Haifa and Nazareth, among many other cities.
